World Leprosy Day (January)
World Leprosy Day is observed annually around the world on the last Sunday of January, falling on 28th January this year. Leprosy, also known as Hensen’s Disease, still occurs in more than 120 countries, with more than 200,000 new cases reported every year. It is currently treated worldwide by multidrug therapy (MDT), which consists of a combination of Rifampin, Clofazimine, and Dapsone.
Although patients are considered “cured” after the completion of MDT, many experience complications associated with leprosy reactions are significant causes of permanent disability, and occasional relapse/reinfection.
The aim of celebrating this day is to raise global awareness of this neglected tropical disease (NTD) and call attention to the fact that it can be prevented, treated, and cured.
Tip – Currently in Myanmar, Rifampicin is mainly given FOC under reimbursement plan by township clinics, NGOs and specialty clinics. The molecules can also be bought with prescription, and mostly under generic brand names from India, China, and Pakistan.
